Library Research Instruction (LRI) is
designed to introduce students to sources and library research strategies needed
for a specific course assignment. The presentations, given by the library
faculty but developed in cooperation with the teaching faculty, are tailor-made
to the course assignment and emphasize principles applicable to future
information needs. Many library users experience "library anxiety." They are
often overwhelmed by the magnitude of information sources, both print and
electronic, and don't know where to start. There are many handouts available
which will familiarize users with basic resources. However, it is better if
students are able to make contact with a librarian who knows about their
assignment, by attending a Library Research Instruction session. Following such
a session, students will be able to express their information needs more
accurately and confidently. A Library Research Instruction class may not answer
all of their questions--but it will make it easier for students to ask for
assistance.
Before the class the librarian will discuss the students' research requirements
with the instructor and then prepare a presentation that will include specific
sources of information that will be useful in completing the assignment. The
presentation may include one or more of the following:
- An introduction to library services and resources, both print and electronic
- Using the online catalog
- Using periodical indexes including the GALILEO databases
- Evaluating World Wide Web sites
- Using reference books and other print sources
Guide for the professor when planning for Library Research Instruction:
- Schedule the class as far in advance as possible, a minimum of one week.
- Schedule the class as soon as a major research assignment is made in order that students will see the potential benefit of a Library Research Instruction session.
- Give the librarian details about the assignment-- when it is due, what sources you want discussed, and when the class should be scheduled. Librarians will tailor presentations to emphasize principal research tools and basic literature for a particular academic subject.
- Attend the library instruction session. Students will take the instruction seriously if you are present to emphasize the relationship with the class assignment. Also interaction with both faculty and students leads to a better understanding of the material presented.
