Interlibrary Loan is a cooperative and courtesy arrangement between libraries which allows us to borrow books or copies of requested articles from other libraries for you to use in your research. In return, Griffin Tech sends books and copies of articles to other libraries for their students and faculty to use. This service is available only for items which the Griffin Technical College does not own and only to Griffin Tech faculty, staff, and students.
Please keep in mind that borrowing items from other libraries is a privilege. Under no circumstance is another library obligated to lend Griffin Tech books or articles.
Who Can Use Interlibrary Loan
- Currently enrolled students in the College.
- Currently employed faculty and staff of the College.
- Retired Faculty and Board of Trustee members.
Guidelines for Requesting Items
- Forms are available at the Reference Desk.
- Please fill out forms as completely as possible. Providing complete citation information helps us to locate the proper item and complete contact information helps us get the item to you. A Librarian will be happy to answer any questions about either section of the form.
Copyright Restrictions
- The Griffin Tech Library must comply with current "fair use" copyright guidelines for ILL, which in some cases limits the number of journal articles per journal title that can be requested.
- Griffin Tech belongs to a number of organizations that provide copyright clearance for photocopies of scholarly articles for research purposes. Patrons should be aware, however, that not every journal participates in copyright clearance, so in some cases, articles may not be available via Interlibrary Loan.
- Some of the Commission on New Technological Uses of Copyrighted Works
(CONTU) guidelines are summarized as follows:
Periodicals published within 5 years of a patron's request are included in the guidelines, The concept is known as the "rule of five." Periodicals older than five years are not addressed by the guidelines, but they are not to be considered fair game for unlimited copying. Copyright term is still in effect. Section 108 or 107 criteria apply.
During a calendar year, no more than 6 copies may be requested and reproduced from any single periodical title (NOT single issue).
For more information on the College's copyright policy visit Griffin Tech's Copyright Webpage.
Receiving and Returning Your Requests
Arrival Time and Pickup
- Delivery time generally takes from 7 days to 3 weeks. Delivery time depends largely on the mail system and the speed of the lending library. Fax requests cannot be guaranteed.
- You will be notified of their arrival by telephone, email, or postcard.
- Requests may be picked up at the Reference Desk.
- Due Dates
- Due dates for ILL items are set by the lending library and range from 10 days to 5 weeks. The due date is the date the item must be returned to the Library. If a book is recalled by the lending library we are obligated to return it immediately. Help us stay in good standing with other libraries by returning items on time.
- Renewals
- If you want to renew an item, please call the Circulation Desk before the item is due to give us sufficient time to request a renewal. Some libraries, however, do not grant renewals.
